Best 2-Letter Scrabble Words Every Player Should Know

Master the 100+ two-letter words that unlock parallel plays and bingo bonuses.

Why two-letter words win games

Two-letter words are the connective tissue of competitive Scrabble. They're how you stack tiles

in parallel rows, set up triple-word scores, and unload awkward racks without passing a turn.

Tournament players memorize all 107 valid two-letter words in the TWL dictionary (127 in

SOWPODS) — and so should you.

The high-value two-letter words

These are the ones that score real points by themselves and combine well with bonus squares:

  • QI — meaning the vital life force in Chinese philosophy. Worth 11 points and the single

most important 2-letter word in modern Scrabble.

  • ZA — slang for pizza. Worth 11 points. Pairs beautifully with parallel plays.
  • XU — a Vietnamese monetary unit. Worth 9 points and disposes of a stubborn X.
  • JO — a sweetheart (Scots). Worth 9 points and saves your J on a bad rack.
  • KA — the spiritual self in Egyptian religion. Worth 6 points.

The unusual but legal ones

These look wrong but are 100% playable:

AA, AB, AD, AE, AG, AH, AI, AL, AR, AW, AY, BA, BI, BO, BY, DE, DO, ED, EF, EH, EL, EM, EN, ER,

ES, ET, EX, FA, FE, GI, GO, HA, HE, HI, HM, HO, ID, IF, IN, IS, IT, LA, LI, LO, MA, ME, MI, MM,

MO, MU, MY, NA, NE, NO, NU, OD, OE, OF, OH, OI, OM, ON, OP, OR, OS, OW, OX, OY, PA, PE, PI, QI,

RE, SH, SI, SO, TA, TI, TO, UH, UM, UN, UP, US, UT, WE, WO, XI, XU, YA, YE, YO, ZA.

How to use them strategically

The real value isn't the 2-letter word itself — it's what you build on top of it. Drop a 5-letter

word parallel to an existing word and you score every new 2-letter pair you create.

A 7-letter bingo played through a triple-word square becomes a 100+ point turn when the

parallel 2-letter combinations all count.

Tip: keep a vowel-heavy rack in reserve. ET, OE, AE, AI, AA, and OI all clear vowel logjams.
